The exam blueprint is the framework for the Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN®) certification exam. The blueprint is valuable to the test taker because it breaks down the sections of the test. Use it to help you focus your study as you prepare for the exam.
Each test question stems from the exam blueprint and is based on a Patient Problem and a Nursing Role (Domains of Nursing Practice*) as listed below. For example, an exam question may ask about instructing a patient with diabetes. The Patient Problem is diabetes and the Domain of Practice is teaching/coaching.

A blueprint is a reproduction of a technical drawing, an architectural plan, or an engineering design, using a contact printprocess on light-sensitive sheets. Introduced by Sir John Herschel in 1842, the process allowed rapid, and accurate, production of an unlimited number of copies. It was widely used for over a century for the reproduction of specification drawingsused in construction and industry. The blueprint process was characterized by white lines on a blue background, a negative of the original. The process was not able to reproduce color or shades of grey.

Testing should never be an afterthought in education. Although a summative or final exam is administered toward the end of a course, it should be used to align the curriculum before the course begins. Developing a blueprint based on educational priorities allows you to prioritize what is taught. It also ensures you have spent enough time covering the tested material in class or lab, or through homework. Before beginning the blueprint, you need to know what type of exam you’re creating. A formative exam (a quiz or unit test administered during the course) should have a minimum of 60 items. A summative exam, which is also called a final exam, has ideally between 150 and 200 items.
The blueprint process is based on a photosensitive ferric compound. The best known is a process using ammonium ferric citrate and potassium ferricyanide. The paper is impregnated with a solution of ammonium ferric citrate and dried. When the paper is illuminated, a photoreaction turns the trivalent ferric iron into divalent ferrous iron. The image is then developed using a solution of potassium ferricyanide forming insoluble ferroferricyanide (Prussian blue or Turnbell's blue) with the divalent iron. Excess ammonium ferric citrate and potassium ferricyanide are then washed away. The process is also known as cyanotype.
